12V vs 24V underwater pool lights: which should you choose?

Low-voltage lighting is the industry default for pools and fountains - and for good reason. NEC Article 680 (USA) and equivalent national codes require pool lighting to operate at low voltage, typically 12V or 24V AC/DC, supplied through an isolation transformer. The table below is the decision reference buyers ask us for most often:

Our practical rule: residential and retrofit jobs → 12V; commercial fountains, multi-fixture water features, and runs over 15 m → 24V. Both are code-compliant low-voltage options; the choice is engineering economics, not quality.

Never skip the transformer math: total connected wattage × 1.25 safety margin, and account for voltage drop with a proper wire gauge table. A 24V system with the right gauge will outperform a 12V system on a long fountain loop every time.
